Rendall & Rittner celebrates World Ocean Day 2022

Almost 71% of the world’s surface is covered in ocean. Every year, World Ocean Day is marked on the 8th of June. This year, the theme for World Ocean Day is 30x30, reflecting the need to protect 30% of our land, water, and ocean by 2030 in order to provide for wildlife and stabilise global climate levels.

On Sunday, World Environment Day was also marked. This year the event had the theme #OnlyOneEarth matching the slogan of the UN Conference on the Human Environment held 50 years ago in 1972. World Environment Day emphasised the need to promote climate action, nature action and pollution action so that we can all preserve the world around us and live more sustainably.

To mark these two occasions, we thought that we would share some of the great ways that we strive to support the environment at Rendall & Rittner.

Stabilising the Climate

Climate action is needed to tackle the rising global temperatures. Experts have stated that we would need to halve global annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in order to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5oC by the end of the century. We are proud to have been working with green energy supplier, Ecotricity, to supply renewable energy to the communal areas at homes across our portfolio. Over the past twelve months, this partnership has saved 19,132 metric tonnes of CO2.

Planting trees is also a great way to counteract some of the effects of climate change as trees are capable of storing large quantities of carbon that would otherwise end up in the atmosphere. Back in December 2020, we established our tree pledge, where we promised to give £1 to a tree planting initiative for every leaseholder who signed up to our e-communications platform. In 2021, we were able to donate £18,000 to the Woodland Trust, which has funded the planting of 2,571 new trees. This is an ongoing initiative, and we are actively encouraging our customers to make this green switch.

Nurturing Nature

A key part of nature action is taking care of ecosystems so that they can thrive. To support the environment close to some of the properties we manage, we have arranged a series of litter picks. The first took place on Monday 23rd May at Woodberry Down in North London and was a great start to the eleven litter picks we have planned up and down the country so far.

Pollution Action

Pollution action is designed to minimize the negative impacts of chemical and waste pollution on human health and the environment. In addition to promoting recycling across our schemes in order to reduce the amount of waste pollution that is generated, we also work with sustainable cleaning company, Delphis Eco. Where possible, we use their eco-friendly line of products to clean our developments, so that we avoid using harsh chemicals that pollute the environment. Find out more about our work with Delphis Eco in this recent guest blog.
